The two videos above show what life is like in Rocinha, Brazil. It tlaks above the problems and ways of making peoples live better.
Shanty towns/favelas - these are settlements in Less Economically Developed Countries (LEDC) such as Brazil and South Africa. They are also referred to as slums and are on the outskirts large towns and cities. The conditions are often very poor and do not meet basic human needs. Conditions in Shanty towns:
often lacks clean water
getting good quality food is often impossible
poor sanitation
housing made of cardboard, wood and corrugated iron
liable to landslides as they are often built on hills
no drainage systems - flooding when it rains and sewerage often sits in the street
houses/shacks are built closely together - very high density urban zone
no toilets
no refuse collection
high crime rates - drug crime
Solutions to the problems Shanty Towns face: Self-help schemes - the Sao Paulo city authority would prefer to remove the shanty towns but this would cost a lot of money as they would have to provide housing and amenities. As a result the city authority has implemented self-help schemes. This involves the city authority giving the residents of the shanty town a small loan to:
improve or extend the house
cheap building materials
basic amenities
